Our Aquaculture & Quarantine Philosophy

At Reef Life Texas, we believe healthy coral starts long before it is listed for sale.

Our approach is built around quarantine, observation, established grow-out systems, and captive propogation. Rather than simply importing coral, cutting it, and immediately reselling it, we focus on maintaining established colonies and growing coral within our Central Texas farm.

Why Aquacultured Coral Matters

Not all coral sold in the aquarium hobby has the same history.

  • Wild coral is collected directly from the ocean and moved into an aquarium environment for the first time

  • Maricultured coral is grown or propagated in the ocean before being harvested and transitioned into aquarium systems

  • Aquacultured coral is propagated and grown entirely in captive aquarium systems, often through multiple generations of fragging and regrowth

We believe fully aquacultured coral gives reef hobbyists an important advantage: it has already proven that it can thrive in a tank environment.

Even in our coral farm, where we use automated monitoring and dosing, Trident testing, regular ICP testing, manual testing, routine water changes, and carefully managed systems, our water still experiences more variation in temperature, nutrients, and chemistry than the open ocean. Most home reef tanks fluctuate even more.

Coral coming directly from the ocean may be accustomed to an incredibly stable natural environment and can struggle during the transition to captivity. Fully aquacultured coral has already been living, growing, and reproducing under the kinds of conditions found in reef aquariums.

When you buy aquacultured coral from Reef Life Texas, you aren't buying coral that has simply survived captivity. You're buying coral that has already thrived in it.

That history doesn't guarantee how any coral will perform in a particular aquarium, but we believe it gives hobbyists a better starting point and a coral that is well adapted to life in a reef tank.

Why We Quarantine

Every new coral entering our farm is treated as a potential risk to the livestock already in our systems.

Before new coral is introduced into our farm, it goes through a quarantine and observation process. During this time, we inspect livestock closely, manage pests and health concerns as needed, and make sure it is stable before moving forward.

Quarantine is one of the most important ways we protect the health of our farm and the coral we eventually send to our customers.

What Quarantine Does and Does Not Mean

Quarantine is an important part of responsible reef keeping, but no coral seller can responsibly promise that adding any live animal to an aquarium is completely risk-free.

Our process is designed to reduce risk, protect the health of our farm, and provide customers with coral that has been carefully observed and established before sale.

We always recommend that reef keepers follow their own dipping, quarantine, and inspection practices before adding new livestock from any source to an established aquarium.

From Quarantine to Aquacultured Coral

Once a coral completes quarantine, it enters our 1,500+ gallon farm system in Salado, Texas, where it is given time to establish and grow. We maintain corals as long-term mother colonies rather than treating them as short-term inventory.

Our process is simple:

  1. Quarantine new livestock before it enters our established farm systems.

  2. Observe and establish healthy coral in our raceways and grow-out tanks.

  3. Grow established mother colonies over time.

  4. Propagate those colonies into new aquacultured frags.

  5. Heal and grow out each frag before it is offered for retail or wholesale sale.

  6. Ship overnight once the coral is ready.

The result is coral that has already been living, growing, and thriving in a captive reef environment before it ever reaches your tank.

Coral Grown With Intention

Reef Life Texas exists because we genuinely enjoy growing coral and contributing to the reefing community.

Whether you are purchasing one frag for your home reef or sourcing livestock for your retail business, our goal is the same: to provide healthy, aquacultured coral backed by responsible husbandry and a transparent process.
